Live Review: Imelda May @ The Old Oak, Cork

As part of the frantic celebrations for Arthur's Day, Ireland's queen of rockabilly stopped by Cork's Old Oak for an impromptu (and free!) set.

The bar was packed with an array of college students, bemused regulars and the fans who had figured out Cyprus Avenue's less than cryptic clue ("It's going to be Mayhem!") to the point where movement was quite difficult.

May played a short set, a little over half an hour only. It included all the hits - Johnny Got A Boom Boom, Big Bad Handsome Man, Mayhem, as well as a cover of Soft Cell's Tainted Love.

She was in flying form, toasting "to Arthur" and enjoying banter with the crowd who erupted the second she arrived on stage, scarcely missing a note. May's backing band deserve some credit too - completely in sync with one another.

It was over almost as soon as it began but certainly marks an interesting way to spend your lunch hour...
