Today is the beginning of another new feature on BullBlackNova: my celebration of cover songs. The weird and the wonderful, the pretty basic, the obvious... Anything that really works could find itself on here. Granted the vast majority of these covers won't exactly be new, but many will have been lost among the hoards of obscure covers pelted out daily by websites and blogs whose sole purpose is to promote such songs...
Anyway. Today's cover is English indie-punk poet Jamie T taking on the heartfelt pop ballad If I Were A Boy, originally performed by Beyoncé Knowles.
Jamie T's version is a surprisingly intimate and heartfelt version of the track, complete with his own reworking of the lyrics. Initially a powerful feminist anthem, Jamie switches the focus a little to put himself in the position of the victim.
It works and wonderfully so. Jamie's version is below. It was performed for the ever excellent Live Lounge series on BBC Radio.
