New Music: Small Black

Resurrecting a feature that has been missing for a while on the blog today - the new music post. These are acts that have only recently come to my attention and who I feel are worthy of being broadcast to a wider audience. The first of three today (the others will follow: neither are immediately new to me, but with new music from them only reaching me yesterday I feel the time is right...) is Brooklyn (where else..?) bases chill-wave act Small Black.

These guys are getting a lot of buzz lately as a result of the new song they have released, Photojournalist. The track is not included on the 7 track self-titled EP that dropped earlier this year but is most likely coming from the band's forthcoming debut LP, set for an October release.

It falls nicely into the chillwave genre - not entirely pushing the boundaries, though it is still among the better releases we've heard this year. Not quite of the standard of Toro Y Moi or Memoryhouse, though it outshines the over hyped Neon Indian for me any day.

Essentially, it does exactly what it says on the tin - relaxed, synth driven, wavey pop music. Subtle vocals, dreamy sounds... We know the formula. It may not be original, but Small Black make it work.
