Live Review: James Vincent McMorrow @ Oxegen 2010

When & Where? Heineken Green Spheres, Friday 9th July @ 2pm

I couldn't have picked an artist I was more eager to see to open the festivities in Punchestown this weekend. With the rain pouring outside, I took to the Green Spheres tent along with a relatively modest crowd. Well dispersed and relaxed, many in attendance were sitting around the tent with a full view of the stage.

James was on fine form. After a shaky start (the sound on the opener Sparrow & the Wolf was a little off, while the man himself simply looked a little nervous) we were treated to the majority of McMorrow's sublime debut album. When the drums and bass from the backing band kicked in on tracks such as From the Woods!! and This Old Dark Machine the sound filled the tent, while McMorrow himself sounded as good as I've ever seen him.

We were also treated to a new track (anyone have a title?) which sounds rather like the National, before evolving into a Jeff Buckley-ish number. A solid effort, it keeps my hopes high for this rising star of the Irish music scene.
